When I draw a cartoon, I start by reading around the subject, so If it’s general news I try to read as much of the day’s news as possible and let it stew in my head for a while.

Then I have a cup of tea, or sometimes a coffee, then I sit down and think… if nothing occurs to me I start to panic! I then have another cup of tea. Usually I aim to have four usable ideas and let the client choose, I send these as roughs, and draw them in a more finished, inky way when they have chosen. The size of the drawing matters, a very small pocket cartoon is usually quick to draw, but sometimes it takes a few goes to get it right. Larger drawings can get more complicated and difficult, and of course I’m always right up against deadline which doesn’t leave much room. I work fast and provide a lot of roughs.
